Shakib Al Hasan returns as Bangladesh ODI captain

Shakib Al Hasan has been appointed Bangladesh ODI captain once again, following Tamim Iqbal’s resignation on August 3. Shakib will lead Bangladesh in the upcoming Asia Cup and World Cup.

BCB president Nazmul Hassan made the announcement in a surprise media briefing at his residence in Dhaka.

“Shakib Al Hasan is the captain for the Asia Cup, New Zealand series and World Cup,” he said. “We will speak more to him when he returns to Bangladesh [from Lanka Premier League]. We have to know his long-term plan. I spoke to him on the phone yesterday. But it is better if we talk to him in person since he is busy with a franchise league currently. We will also talk about which format he will keep leading, whether it is all three formats or one or two of them.

The 35-year-old all-rounder is Bangladesh’s most successful ODI captain, with a win percentage of 54.28. He has previously captained Bangladesh in 52 ODIs, winning 28 of them.

Shakib’s appointment is a major boost for Bangladesh ahead of the Asia Cup and World Cup. He is one of the world’s best all-rounders and his experience and leadership will be invaluable to the team.

Tamim Iqbal resigned as ODI captain after he was ruled out of the Asia Cup due to a back injury. He is hoping to be fit for the ODI series against New Zealand in September and the World Cup in October.

Bangladesh will be looking to improve on their performance in the 2019 World Cup, where they were eliminated in the group stage. With Shakib Al Hasan back in charge, they will be confident of doing well in the upcoming tournaments.
