In a remarkable performance at the ongoing ICC Women’s T20 WC Asia Qualifier 2023 in Malaysia, Nepal clinched their third consecutive win by defeating Bhutan with 3 wickets in hand. Nepal had previously triumphed over Malaysia and Bahrain.
Nepal successfully chased down the target of 40 runs for victory in just 13.2 overs, thanks to the determined efforts of Captain Rubina Chhetri, who top-scored with 12 runs. Kavita Joshi contributed 9 runs, Sita Rana Magar added 8 runs, and Puja Mahato scored 3 runs. Nepal faced a challenging start, losing their first 5 wickets for a mere 16 runs, but Captain Rubina led them to victory.
For Bhutan, Anjuli Ghalley claimed 3 wickets, while Tshering Zangmo took 2 wickets, and Anju Gurung and Sonam each secured 1 wicket.
In their innings, Bhutan managed to score 39 runs for the loss of 8 wickets. Apart from Captain Dechen Wangmo, who contributed 21 runs, none of the other players reached double figures, with 4 players dismissed for zero runs.
Puja Mahato was the star bowler for Nepal, taking 3 wickets. Nepal won the toss and chose to bowl first. Kabita Kunwar, Rubina Chhetry, and Khushi Dangol also claimed 1 wicket each.
With this third consecutive win, Nepal has significantly improved their chances of reaching the semi-finals. Nepal’s next match is scheduled against Qatar tomorrow, and they will face UAE in their fifth match on Wednesday, September 6th. Nepal is virtually assured of a spot in the semi-finals by winning just one of these two matches. Even if they lose both matches, they could still qualify for the semi-finals depending on the results of the other teams.
