In a significant legal development, the District Court in Kathmandu has handed down a verdict against cricketer Sandeep Lamichhane, finding him guilty of rape. The sentencing includes an eight-year imprisonment term and a fine of three lakhs. Additionally, the court has ordered Lamichhane to pay compensation of two lakh rupees to the victim.
The decision was announced by Judge Shishirraj Dhakal during proceedings on Wednesday, as revealed by Bunu Bhandari, a salaried lawyer at the Kathmandu District Court. Lamichhane, however, is not accepting the verdict and is set to appeal the decision in the High Court.
Advocate Sarojkrishna Ghimire, who is representing Lamichhane, asserts the cricketer’s innocence and plans to pursue justice in the higher court. Ghimire contends that there is no basis, reason, or evidence to prove Lamichhane’s guilt.
Advocate Ghimire emphasized their stance in the sentencing debate, advocating for a reduced punishment based on Lamichhane’s positive contributions to the sports world, his exemplary character, and social responsibility.
The sentencing by Judge Shishirraj Dhakal on December 29th marked the culmination of the case against Sandeep Lamichhane.
