Nepali Cricket Enters New Era with Floodlight Matches in NPL

23 July 2025

Big news for Nepali cricket fans — the Nepal Premier League (NPL) is gearing up for an electrifying second edition, and this time, some of the action will unfold under the floodlights at the Tribhuvan University International Cricket Ground in Kirtipur.

In a recent podcast with franchise team Sudurpaschim Royals, CAN Secretary Paras Khadka confirmed the exciting plan to host night matches at TU. The Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) has also officially backed the initiative.

“The ground is currently under renovation. If the work completes on time, we will conduct night matches under lights,” said CAN spokesperson Chhumbi Lama.

The iconic Kirtipur venue is undergoing major upgrades, with construction of a 15,000-capacity parapet and installation of six floodlight towers already in progress. Though the initial deadline (end of Ashar) wasn’t met, CAN has extended the timeline with penalties imposed on the contractor.

The second edition of NPL is set for November–December 2025, with a Mini Auction scheduled for August. Player registration for the auction closed last night, and the final player list will be made public soon.

With world-class infrastructure being added, the NPL is all set to deliver a new cricketing experience for players and fans alike. Floodlight matches in Kathmandu — a dream turning into reality.
