Nepal defeat Hong Kong to keep World Cup hopes alive

Nepal defeated hosts Hong Kong by 6 runs in the ICC Women’s World Cup Qualifying Series Asia Region and avenged the 6th wicket loss to the host in Nepal’s opening match of the tournament.  Scorecard , Points Table

This is Nepal’s second win in 4 matches. In the other matches played today China pulled off an upset handing tournament favorites Thailand their first defeat. Thailand leads the points table with 3 wins. Hong Kong and Nepal both have 2 wins but Hong Kong stands second owing to better NRR.  The winner of this event will progress to the ICC 2017 Women’s World Cup Global Qualifier.

Winning the toss and batting first Nepal posted 75 runs in 20 overs. Having slumped to 9/3 in 4 overs Indu Verma(15) and Jyoti Pandey(11) lifted Nepal with 20 run partnership. Nary Thapa scored 10 runs off 12 balls to improve Nepals run rate in the middle. Karuna Bhandari batting at number 8 made 19 off 27 balls late in the innings with 2 boundaries to take Nepal to 75.

Betty Chan bagged 3 wickets for China giving only 11 runs from 4 overs. In reply the Chinese team were folded for 69 runs. Having been 33/1 in seven overs they lost the other 8 wickets for 25 runs. Opener Kary Chan top scored for China with 18 from 22 balls. Hong Kong were 9/58 in 14th over but the last wicket partnership of Betty Chan, who used open for HK in past, and Yee Shan To added 11 runs to keep HK hopes alive but failed to take HK across the line. Karuna Bhandari was adjudged the player of the match for her all round performance
