Sompal’s all round performance not enough to defeat Netherlands

Netherlands (Bas De Leede 39, Van Der Merwe 4/20) 189/9 defeat Nepal (Sompal Kami 36 & 4/24) 144 all out by 45 runs

Sompal Kami’s exceptional all round performance was eclipsed by Roelof Van der Merwe to help the Dutch finish 7th in the ICC World Cup Qualifiers.

Chasing 190 to finish 7th, Nepal’s opening duo failed for the umpteenth time with Gyanendra Malla departing early on for 4 runs, soon followed by Anil Sah for 8 runs. At 51 runs, Nepal lost Paras Khadka, caught by Max O’Dowd in the ball of Van Der Merwe. The batting collapse sustained as they lost wickets at regular intervals before getting bundled to 144.

Sompal Kami tried to accomplish the chase with 36 runs that included 3 fours and a six but failed to Fred Klassen. Dipendra Singh Airee was second to Kami in the batting chart with 25 runs from 38 balls.

For the Dutch side, Van Der Merwe’s four-fer was vital in dismissing Nepal for cheap. Fred Klassen and Pieter Seelar were equally good snapping 2 wickets each.

Earlier, Bas de Leede’s 39 with the bat helped Netherlands to post a decent score in a green track. Despite Sompal’s 4 wicket haul, Netherlands put on a decent total in a bowling friendly pitch. The Dutch batsman contributed partially with Max O’Dowd 28, Van Der Merwe’s 25, Edward’s 25, Seelar’s 23 and Snater’s 23.

Sompal on the way to his best figure of the tournament snatched 4 wickets yielding only 24 runs in 10 overs. Sandeep Lamichhane and Lalit Rajbanshi also took 2 wickets each.
