Basant Regmi, Born on 6th April 1986, is the most consistent bowler of Nepal. Slow left arm bowler has playing for Nepal from age level to senior level. In early days, played for Nepal U17, U19 and U23 and currently the highest wicket taker for Nepal in int’l cricket. Manoj Ghimire lists down few interesting things about the wily Nepalese cricketer.
1. First match in Nepal’s jersey at 14.
Basant Regmi had represented Nepal for the first time in U17 in ICC U17 Asia Cup, 2000 against Kuwait U17 in Pakistan but unfortunately Nepal lost that match. In that match 14 years old boy from Bhairahawa hadn’t got the oppertunity to bowl but had crossed double figures (10 off 29) with the bat.
2. Medium pacer turned Spinner
Regmi entered the Nepalese cricketing arena as a left-armed fast bowler with a reputation for swinging the ball both ways. However, he suffered a motorbike accident, which left a significant impact in his career. The accident left Regmi with a broken finger and caused him to change his bowling action, shifting from fast bowling to finger spin, which eventually turned out to be effective.
3. Utility cricketer
Regmi is a valuable cricketer; he is a left arm orthodox spinner and a decent lower-order batsman who bailed Nepal out on several occasions with his aggressive batting. If needed he can holds the innings with the bat too.
4. Match winning performance in 2nd match for Nepal U17
After loosing 1st match against Kuwait U17 in the ICC Asia Cup 2000, Nepal made comeback to win the match by 9 wickets against Bahrain U17 where Regmi had taken 3 wickets conceding 6 runs in 5 overs and awarded by Man of the match trophy. That was Regmi’s 1st ever MoTM award in int’l cricket.
5. Man of the match in Plate championship final
It was 2005/06 season when Nepal beat South Africa in the semi final of plate championship to meet New Zeland in the final. Thanks to the crisis man for match winning 66 runs with the bat and 3 wickets with the ball against the Blackcaps U19 and that was the first ever occassion where associate team won plate championship and Regmi was the man for Nepal.
6. Basant Regmi vs Suresh Raina
It was three matches series of India U19 in Nepal in 2002/03 where India whitewash the series but one thing crisis man and his supporters will remember that he bowled Indian counterpart Suresh Raina (6 off 11) where India U19 beat Nepal by 4 wickets in the last match of the series.
7. Key role to draw in I Cup Qualifying match in 2006
In March 2006, Nepal played Namibia in Windhoek in a play-off match to decide the final team in the 2006 ICC Intercontinental Cup. Nepal needed to win outright to qualify for the main tournament, but the match was drawn after there was no play on the first day.
In that match Regmi picked up 2 wickets for 51 runs and played the vital role with the bat and hold the innings of 5 from 57 deliveries.
8. Key role to win over Meryleborn Cricket Club (England)
It was Meryleborn Cricket Club tour to Nepal in 2008/09 for 3 One day (Nepal 2 -1 MCC) and each Twenty20 (Nepal 1 – 0 MCC) and 3-day matches (Nepal 1 – 0 MCC) at Tribhuwan University Ground, Kirtipur.
Regmi played crucial role in Nepal’s win of by an innings and 116 runs vs MCC lead by former England Test cricketer Min Patel. Regmi picked up 3/20 and 3/27 and scored unbeaten 18.
9. 5-wickets-haul in the final of WCL Division 4, 2012
Regmi picked up 5 wickets haul against United States of America (USA) in the final of ICC WCL Division four 2012 in Malaysia where Nepal won by 8 wickets to lift the trophy.
Further, Basant Regmi is the only man to take 100 wickets (actually 103) in World Cricket League. His 100th wicket was Netherlands’ Stephan Myburgh in WCL Division 2.
